Established under the name International University Bremen, the English-language private university became the Jacobs University Bremen after an investment of 200 million euros by the Jacobs Foundation in 2006. It was modeled after universities in the UK and the US, and has come to be recognized as an important model project in the German field of higher education. With this university, the Jacobs Foundation has demonstrated that private efforts can also produce results in teaching and research, and has contributed to the advancement of Germany’s university landscape.
Excellent research and success
During the 12 years since it was founded, Jacobs University has established itself as a Bremen brand with an international reputation. Jacobs University is regularly listed among the top German universities in independent rankings. The Centre for Higher Education (CHE), has ranked the university in natural and social sciences among the top universities in the last years. BIGSSS (Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences) as joint graduate school of Jacobs University and the University of Bremen is again part of the German ‘Excellence Initiative’. Many graduates of Jacobs University have moved on to universities like Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and Stanford, or hold positions of leadership at international companies.
Set the course for the future
The course is set for the years to come to further strengthen the financial basis of this academically renowed university. The newly appointed President of Jacobs University, Professor Katja Windt, introduces a comprehensive new approach to teaching, research and the transfer of knowledge and presents a new business plan for the university, which is approved by the university’s Board of Governors.
Jacobs University’s fundamental mission as an international research university with high standards for the quality of its teaching will be even strengthened. Key features of its approach include student-centered teaching, interdisciplinary degree programs, a wide variety of research-based learning opportunities, and degree programs that reflect the needs of the labor market. Campus life in the colleges complements students’ academic studies by encouraging personal growth and cross-cultural encounters. In its research efforts, Jacobs University will focus on topics designed to benefit both society and the economy: Health (focus on bioactive substances), mobility (of people, goods, and information) as well as diversity (of modern societies).
The consistent implementation of this model for a small, independent, private research university under the new president’s leadership is the prerequisite to achieve a balanced budget in the long term and so prepare the university for the future.
